The recent rains in the central region caused river flows to rise, bringing with them a large amount of trash. One of these affected rivers was the Maipo, with tons of waste being carried to the mouth of the tributary and into the estuary.

In this regard, the Cosmos Foundation points out that what happened is a problem for the environment and says that “it is urgent to change our attitude.”

Ignacio Ascui, regional coordinator of the Cosmos Foundation, explained that they found “a lot of trash in the sanctuary and along the entire beach due to the force of the river, bringing garbage from the upper part of the Metropolitan Region to here, a lot of branches and wood that are not part of the context. Also a lot of plastic and garbage bags.”

But this situation prompted both residents and visitors to help clean up this trash from the area. “Strengthening these places is a great mission and a minimal contribution we can make,” said one of the participants in this activity.
