Ignacio Ascuí, Valparaíso Region Coordinator of the Cosmos Foundation, and Matías Maulen, park ranger of the Maipo River Wetland Park, spoke to Red Noticias V Region.

This is because the foundation was awarded funding from the Valparaíso Regional Government to implement a socio-ecological restoration program in the Maipo River Wetland Nature Sanctuary. The program seeks to recover nearly three hectares of degraded wetland areas in collaboration with experts and communities, based on three components: socio-ecological remediation, socio-ecological rehabilitation, and socio-ecological education.

At the meeting, they explained that socio-ecological remediation will be carried out, i.e., the removal of branches and debris, and chipping of intensively used areas. This management activity aims to eliminate the sources of degradation, and in this case, it will be achieved by removing one of the main drivers of the SNHRM’s ecological degradation.

They also noted that socio-ecological rehabilitation, including planting and maintenance, will be carried out, along with other activities. This will take place over a two-year period, during which they seek to initiate a regeneration process for one of the country’s most populated socio-ecosystems, whose ecological stress has increased over the decades, bringing consequences that we can now transform into opportunities.
