Madam Director:

In our role as administrators of the Maipo River Wetland Nature Sanctuary, we view with concern the call made on Tuesday by President Gabriel Boric during the VI International Forum organized by InvestChile. The President stated that “we cannot continue to postpone the Port of San Antonio,” in a thinly veiled call to approve the Outer Port project, which is currently in the environmental assessment phase of the SEIA (Security and Environmental Protection Agency). We consider the President’s remarks, at the very least, hasty, given that the State Administrative Bodies with Environmental Competence (OAECA) continue to issue their observations on the project.

It is worth remembering that the project owner submitted Addendum No. 1, which seeks to address more than 1,500 observations issued by public bodies with environmental jurisdiction and by the community itself during the first stage of the project’s processing.

For this reason, we demand that in a process as complex as the environmental assessment of the Outer Port, the Executive maintain due discretion and encourage objective and unbiased analysis by the relevant public services.
