Maullín Riverbank
Maullín, Los Lagos Region, Chile.
In 2025, Fundación Legado Chile and Fundación Cosmos began a collaboration to develop the Master Plan for infrastructure around the source of the Maullín River . This is a territory of high ecological and cultural value that, despite its potential, remains fragmented and inaccessible to the community.
The project seeks to transform this riverfront into a public space that integrates ecological restoration, accessible infrastructure and cultural heritage, improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of Llanquihue and strengthening the identity of the territory.
Maullín Riverside Lookout
As the first concrete intervention of the Master Plan, the construction of a viewpoint on the south bank of the Maullín River is proposed. This infrastructure seeks to mark the beginning of the transformation of the riverbank, creating a meeting point between the community and the river ecosystem.
The viewpoint is designed as a low-impact elevated platform that allows bird watching, contemplation of the river landscape, and close contact with the native flora and fauna of the area.
The intervention includes interpretive signage that links the observable landscape with the unique ecological characteristics of the place, such as the richness of species, the remarkable presence of birds and the native vegetation.
Diagnosis and methodology
The Master Plan is being developed through a territorial, social, and ecological analysis process, which includes site visits and meetings with local stakeholders. This process allows for the evaluation of the area’s ecosystem services, the identification of the degradation levels in different sectors, and an assessment of the land’s condition, which includes municipal properties, areas linked to Mapuche communities, and private properties with a willingness to collaborate.
Master Plan and Next Steps
Based on the diagnosis, Fundación Cosmos is developing a zoning proposal and a portfolio of prioritized projects aimed at restoring the ecological connectivity of the riverfront and creating spaces for public use. The process is currently in the final stages of the master plan, with the goal of initiating community validation and selecting a flagship project that will kickstart the transformation of the Maullín River waterfront.
