The Cosmos Foundation commemorated World Wetlands Day at the Río Maipo Wetland Nature Sanctuary, bringing together local and regional authorities, public services, environmental organizations and residents of the wetland.
The activity highlighted the Maipo estuary ecosystem – made up of the sanctuary, the Ojos de Mar urban wetland in Llolleo and the corridor that connects them – as a natural, social and cultural heritage for the province of San Antonio, capable of facing the effects of climate change, safeguarding biodiversity and contributing directly to the well-being and resilience of the communities.
With the presence of the mayor of Santo Domingo, Fernando Rodríguez, along with representatives of the Regional Government of Valparaíso and the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (Sbap), the day was marked by a posthumous tribute to Milko Caracciolo, former councilor of San Antonio and former member of the sanctuary’s advisory group, highlighting his contribution to the protection of the mouth of the Maipo River.
Regarding the joint work carried out by the Municipality of Santo Domingo and the Cosmos Foundation, in an alliance that has lasted for more than ten years, Mayor Rodríguez explained that “we have achieved very good results in the management of this space, which has not only included a restoration process, but also aims to showcase the environmental and social richness of this place, where people can visit, learn about nature, and relax. It has been a great undertaking, and we want to further promote it as a place of study for ecological restoration.”
