The documentary shows how an area previously covered in plant debris and waste was transformed through ecological restoration techniques as part of an active conservation project.
In the context of International Earth Day, the Santo Domingo community attended the screening of the documentary “Volver Habitar: Restaurando el Santuario de la Naturaleza Humedal Río Maipo,” an audiovisual piece that portrays the ecological restoration process of three hectares of this important ecosystem shared with the commune of San Antonio.
The screening took place in the Santo Domingo municipal auditorium and was organized by the Cosmos Foundation, in conjunction with the Municipality. The documentary shows how an area previously covered in plant debris and waste was transformed through ecological restoration techniques as part of an ongoing conservation project.
Ignacio Ascui, regional coordinator of the Cosmos Foundation, explained that the initiative reflects a recovery model based on community participation and long-term environmental commitment. Manuel Álvarez, the commune’s acting director of Environment, Sanitation, and Ornamentation, praised the joint work with the foundation, emphasizing that “collaboration goes beyond funding; we build relationships that allow these initiatives to be sustained over time.”
Among the attendees were prominent cultural and environmental figures such as Gonzalo Frías, host of the television program Séptimo Vicio, who described the documentary as “a powerful tool for emotionally connecting with the territory.” Also present was landscape architect Pilar Bezanilla, who emphasized the importance of preserving native flora in these unique ecosystems.
“Volver Habitar” is 27 minutes long and is now available on the Cosmos Foundation YouTube channel, where it can be viewed by those who wish to learn more about this valuable ecological restoration effort in the Parque Comuna.
