This initiative is incorporated into the 2022 Water Code, allowing these rivers to flow freely and healthily for the benefit of humanity.
With a grand celebration in Futaleufú, bringing together members of the Puelo, Futaleufú, and Palena communities, as well as national, regional, and local authorities, the progress achieved by the campaigns for the Futaleufú and Puelo rivers was celebrated. Their waters are on the verge of being protected through a flow reserve for ecosystem preservation purposes, making them the first rivers in Chile with this category.
“This initiative to recognize the Water Management Authority of the Ministry of Public Works, to advance the water reserve decree for the Futaleufú and Puelo rivers, is the first protection of rivers in Patagonia based on ecosystem preservation, incorporated into the 2022 reform of the Water Code. This means that these two rivers will be able to continue flowing freely and healthily, available to humanity,” said Governor Patricio Vallespin.
“This is an important milestone for us, as well as for all the communities fighting to protect all natural waterways. It’s a milestone for the country, which needs to make progress in protecting our natural resources,” said Darío Urrutia, a resident and activist of the Puelo River.
