How do these ecosystems protect the environment? Learn about the importance of protecting these spaces, declared nature sanctuaries.
In the last 90 days, the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC) has recorded more than 35 heat waves in different cities across the country, and the Metropolitan Region remains on red alert for extreme heat. Santiago reached the third-highest maximum temperature in its history, registering 37.3°C on Wednesday, according to the DMC.
Against this backdrop—a response to the effects of climate change—wetlands emerge as true “natural climate regulators” that regulate temperature ranges and mitigate the impact of heat waves on people.
From the Cosmos Foundation, conservation managers who have been collaborating with the Municipality of Santo Domingo, Valparaíso Region, for 10 years in the management and administration of the Maipo River Wetland Park, seek to protect these “green infrastructures.”
And in passing, they warn of the urgent need to concentrate public-private efforts to protect these ecosystems throughout the country, as they act as stabilizers of greenhouse gas emissions and store more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth, which in turn helps contain rising temperatures.
