A unique day was experienced at El Convento de Santo Domingo School, with 4th-grade students, who learned about the importance of the Maipo River Wetland as a refuge for migratory birds, its biodiversity, and its role in human well-being and resilience in the face of climate change.
This project, developed by Audubon Americas and the Cosmos Foundation, is part of Birds Without Borders, an initiative that seeks to unite museums, exhibitions, and centers throughout the Americas to highlight the incredible journeys of migratory birds.
The traveling booth was the centerpiece of the activity, inviting students to explore concepts such as habitat, ecosystem, and migration through fun and interactive activities. Students identified birds, reflected on threats, and brought migratory and wetland birds to life with their drawings.
“Conservation without children makes no sense. They are the future and they raise awareness among their families about changing behaviors that can affect biodiversity,” said Valentina Kaid, conservation project coordinator at the Cosmos Foundation.
The Maipo River wetland, in the municipality of Santo Domingo, is a natural treasure of hemispheric importance. This ecosystem is home and refuge to a great diversity of migratory birds, some of which are globally and nationally threatened. Its role as a biological corridor is essential for the conservation of these species and for environmental balance, standing out as a heritage that must be protected for the well-being of communities.
