The Cosmos Foundation carried out a major reforestation campaign in Santo Domingo to restore native forests.

To this end, volunteers collaborated by planting seeds of endemic and native trees from the area, using the surprising Miyawaki Method, a Japanese technique that implements ecological restoration using the natural vegetation of an area.

According to Matías Maulen, Field Coordinator of the Cosmos Foundation, 360 plants were used for this method, which is expected to begin showing growth effects within three years, unlike other techniques, which can take up to fifty years to fully appreciate the growth of a species. At the same time, Vicente Vázquez, the field coordinator, noted that “the use of this methodology is unprecedented for the coast and the park, so we are happy to see so many people who came to voluntarily plant these endemic and native species of the wetland.”

It’s worth noting that preparing for a Miyawaki forest involves adding nutrients and preparing the soil in advance, using composting in the area, preparing the layers, and then planting seeds. Maintaining and irrigating the area is essential for its development.
